Identifying Pests in Your Loft

Rodents are the most common loft invaders across the North East. They enter through gaps as small as 15mm and can cause serious damage by gnawing through electrical cables, water pipes, and structural timbers. Activity is often worst in autumn and winter when rodents seek warmth indoors.

Grey squirrels frequently enter lofts through damaged soffits, gaps around roof tiles, or overhanging branches. They are larger and noisier than rodents and cause significant structural damage. Squirrels are most active during daylight hours, unlike rats and mice.

Pigeons, starlings, and house sparrows often nest in loft spaces, particularly under loose tiles or through gaps in eaves. Bird droppings carry bacteria and fungi that can pose health risks, and nesting material can block ventilation and create fire hazards.

Wasps build nests in lofts during spring and summer, often in the eaves or attached to rafters. A nest can contain thousands of wasps by late summer and poses a serious sting risk, particularly for anyone allergic. Nests are not reused the following year, but new queens may return to the same area.

Cluster flies hibernate in lofts in large numbers during autumn and winter. They are not a hygiene pest but can be a significant nuisance, covering windows and light fittings in their hundreds. They tend to return to the same loft space year after year.

Bats are a legally protected species in the UK under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations. It is an offence to deliberately disturb, injure, or kill bats, or to damage or obstruct access to their roosts, even when bats are not present.
