Rats and Mice
Rodents are the most common loft invaders across the North East. They enter through gaps as small as 15mm and can cause serious damage by gnawing through electrical cables, water pipes, and structural timbers. Activity is often worst in autumn and winter when rodents seek warmth indoors.
Signs to look for
- Dark, pellet-shaped droppings along joists and near insulation
- Gnaw marks on cables, pipework, or stored items
- Shredded insulation, cardboard, or fabric used as nesting material
- Scratching or scurrying sounds, especially at night
- Greasy rub marks along beams and edges where rodents travel
What to do
Do not handle droppings without gloves. Avoid disturbing nesting material. Contact a qualified pest controller for a survey to identify entry points and recommend treatment and proofing.
