Professional midge control for homes and businesses across the North East. Larvicidal treatments, residual barrier sprays, ULV fogging, light management, and exclusion measures. Seasonal programmes for commercial premises.
Midges are small flying insects that swarm in large numbers, particularly near water, in gardens, and around commercial premises. While biting midges (Culicoides spp.) cause irritating, itchy bites, non-biting midges (Chironomidae) are primarily a nuisance, swarming around lights, contaminating food surfaces, and making outdoor spaces unusable. For homeowners and businesses across the North East, midge pressure is a seasonal reality, but it can be managed effectively.
Why acting quickly matters
Midge populations can explode from manageable levels to dense swarms within days after warm, wet weather. Biting midges are active from April to October, and without treatment, standing water near your property produces new generations every 2 to 3 weeks throughout the season.

Midges swarm in large numbers making outdoor areas unusable. Non-biting midges contaminate food surfaces and accumulate around lighting. Biting midges deliver painful, itchy bites often in clusters.
Biting midges cause irritating bites and allergic reactions. Non-biting midge shed skins are a known allergen that can trigger respiratory irritation in sensitive individuals. Midges around food preparation areas pose an environmental health risk.

Effective midge control requires a combination of larval source reduction, adult suppression, and exclusion. There is no single-product solution.
All treatments are carried out using COSHH-compliant, approved insecticides by qualified technicians.
Midge swarms pose a particular risk to:
We provide tailored commercial midge management programmes across Darlington, Stockton, Hartlepool, Durham, and Middlesbrough for businesses requiring ongoing control throughout the season. Midge problems often overlap with fly control requirements. For outdoor education settings and agricultural premises, seasonal midge management is particularly important. See how we work for details of our approach.
Midges are most active at dawn and dusk in still, humid conditions. Clearing blocked gutters and removing standing water from your property reduces breeding opportunities.
When DIY may be sufficient: Using DEET-based repellent, wearing long sleeves at dawn and dusk, and avoiding standing water areas. Citronella candles and anti-midge coils can reduce biting around outdoor seating areas on calm evenings.
When you need Wynyard Pest Control: If midges are making outdoor areas unusable for your family, customers, or guests, professional treatment can significantly reduce numbers around your property. Hospitality businesses, caravan parks, and properties near watercourses across Hartlepool, Darlington, and Sunderland often need seasonal treatment programmes to keep outdoor areas usable during peak midge months.

Biting midges are most problematic from May to September, with peak swarm activity in the early morning and late evening. The North East's coastal areas, river valleys, and moorland are particularly affected. Outdoor events, hospitality venues, and livestock operations see the greatest impact during the warmer months.
Plan outdoor events and hospitality schedules around peak midge activity. Site treatments and barrier sprays applied before the season begins are more effective than reactive measures.
Spring (April to May) - First emergence: Non-biting midges (chironomids) are the first to emerge from ponds, ditches, and waterlogged ground as water temperatures rise above 10°C. Biting midges (Culicoides) follow shortly after. Watch for: small swarms forming over water features, gutters, and damp areas at dusk; midges gathering around outdoor lights; and larvae visible in standing water, birdbaths, and blocked gutters across properties in Hartlepool, Sunderland, and Durham. This is the ideal time for larvicidal treatment before populations build.
Summer (June to August) - Peak swarming season: Warm, still evenings produce the largest midge swarms. Non-biting midges gather in dense clouds near water sources and illuminated buildings. Biting midges (Highland midges and their lowland relatives) are most active at dawn and dusk, particularly in sheltered, humid areas near water. Watch for: dense swarms at dusk making outdoor seating areas unusable, biting midge attacks on exposed skin, midges entering buildings through open windows and doors, and large numbers of dead midges accumulating around exterior light fittings. Hospitality businesses, care homes, and outdoor events across Middlesbrough, Stockton, and Darlington are most affected.
Autumn (September to October) - Declining but persistent: Midge activity decreases as temperatures fall, but warm spells can trigger late-season hatches from breeding sites that produced multiple generations through summer. Watch for: reduced but continued swarming on mild evenings, persistent activity near water features and waterlogged ground, and midges seeking shelter indoors as outdoor conditions cool. Autumn is a good time to address long-term breeding sites: clear blocked gutters, drain standing water, and add circulation to ornamental ponds.
Winter (November to February) - Dormant period: Midge larvae overwinter in mud and sediment at the bottom of ponds, ditches, and waterlogged ground. Adult activity ceases. Watch for: no active midge problems during this period. Winter is the ideal time for prevention: clear debris from gutters and drains, repair any areas of waterlogging, install or maintain water feature pumps, and switch external lighting to amber or warm-white LEDs which attract significantly fewer insects when activity resumes in spring.
A structured, three-stage approach that treats the problem and prevents it returning.
Step 1
A detailed property inspection identifies entry points, infestation hotspots, and the species involved. A targeted treatment plan is developed based on findings.
Step 2
Professional control measures are applied using advanced techniques and CRRU-compliant products. Proofing and sealing work addresses the root cause at the same time.
Step 3
Follow-up visits confirm the problem is resolved. You receive clear documentation, prevention advice, and recommendations for ongoing protection.
Larvicides, barrier sprays, ULV fogging, light management, and exclusion combined for maximum effect.
Treating breeding areas at source reduces midge numbers before they become adults.
Tailored programmes for hospitality, food businesses, care homes, and outdoor events.
Repeat visits throughout the active season for premises requiring ongoing control.

We are full members of the National Pest Technicians Association (NPTA). This means our technicians meet strict training and competency standards, carry appropriate insurance, and follow the association's code of practice. NPTA membership is your assurance that the work is carried out professionally and responsibly.
Every job is different. The cost depends on the type of pest, scale of the problem, and what treatment is needed. We provide a free assessment and an honest quotation before any work begins. No hidden costs, no surprises.
View our pricing guideFor seasonal programme customers, if midge activity has not noticeably reduced after the first treatment cycle, we will reassess and adjust the approach at no additional charge.
Biting midges cause irritating, sometimes allergic reactions. Non-biting midges do not bite but can trigger respiratory irritation in sensitive individuals through shed skin allergens. Neither species poses a serious health threat to most people.
Midge populations are heavily influenced by weather. Warm, still, humid conditions following wet periods cause rapid population explosions. Proximity to water is the biggest single factor.
In the UK, midge pressure typically runs from April to October, peaking in June to August. Biting midges are most active in warm, still conditions at dawn and dusk.
For domestic settings, a single treatment with source reduction often provides good control for a season. Commercial premises or properties near significant water sources often benefit from a seasonal management programme with repeat visits.
The approach is similar, but the source habitat differs. Biting midges breed in boggy ground and are harder to eliminate at source. Non-biting midges breed in standing water which is more treatable. Your technician will tailor the approach after a site assessment.
