Identifying Pests in Your Kitchen

Mice are the most reported kitchen pest in domestic properties. They can squeeze through gaps as small as 6mm and are drawn to food crumbs, pet food, and cereal boxes. Mice contaminate surfaces with urine and droppings as they move, posing a real food safety risk.

Brown rats enter kitchens via drains, damaged pipework, gaps around utility entries, and even toilet waste pipes. They carry diseases including leptospirosis and salmonella. Rat activity in a kitchen is a serious hygiene risk and, for food businesses, an immediate compliance concern.

German and Oriental cockroaches thrive in warm, humid kitchen environments. They are nocturnal and can remain hidden behind appliances, inside wall cavities, and beneath flooring. Cockroaches spread bacteria including E. coli and salmonella, and their shed skins and droppings can trigger asthma and allergies.

Black garden ants are the most common species found in UK kitchens. They are attracted to sugary foods and can trail in large numbers from outdoor nests through tiny cracks in walls or around windows. While they do not carry disease, they contaminate food and are a persistent nuisance.

House flies, fruit flies, and drain flies are common in kitchens. House flies spread bacteria by landing on food after visiting waste and decaying matter. Fruit flies breed rapidly in overripe fruit, drains, and compost bins. Drain flies indicate organic build-up in plumbing.

Indian meal moths, flour beetles, weevils, and biscuit beetles infest dried goods including flour, rice, cereals, spices, pasta, and pet food. Infestations often arrive in contaminated products from suppliers and can spread quickly through an entire pantry or storeroom.
